Marisol McDonald Book Trailer

This book is was written by Monica Brown and illustrations by Sara Palacias. The genre of this book will fall under the category of picture books and fiction. This book is about a little girl named Marisol McDonald who doesn't match or like to match and according to everyone else opinion, she doesn't match. Marisol has flaming red hair, nut brown colored skin and chocolate colored freckles on her face. Marisol favorite combination would consist of polka dots and stripes and her lunch would be peanut butter and jelly dorritos. Marisol not only speaks English but Spanish as well.

This illustrations by Sara Palacias on the cover of the book really captures the difference of Marisol showing her bright colored red hair and the freckles displayed over her nose. The cover definitely captures your attention with her bright red hair.

My personal comments about the book is that I feel this would be a good book for a child to read who thinks they are different or who is struggling with the way they look. This is a good book for children who are from a diverse and multicultural background. I really enjoyed reading the book. I can relate to Marisol growing up because I was much different from my peers and did things backwards or out of the norm.

Classroom activities:
I would have the class to answer the following questions about themselves.
1. When someone looks at you, do you think they would say that you are different?
2. What types of clothing do you like to wear?
3. Do you feel that you are different or just like your peers?
4. How can you tell if what you are wearing actually matches or does it just match in your opinion?

I would teach students that it is okay to be different because that's what makes everyone unique in their own special way. No two individuals are exactly alike even identical twins differ in some sort of way. I would teach them to embrace their difference and never shy away from it.
